Geek and Banter was conceived in a pub in London on Wednesday 14th September 2011.
The two of us happily admit that we enjoy a bit of geeky conversation. We had met for a catch up and a couple of drinks. As usual, the conversation veered off into realms of data, artificial intelligence and the general, theoretical, fanciful application of technology to everyday problems. Equally usually, as the beer count rose, the topics became a bit more outlandish and a bit of playful ribbing crept in to supplement the geeky topics. Some pub banter with an underlying current of geekiness.
What we realised, whilst we were referencing our geeky topics was that we each had different groups of geeky friends with whom we’d probably end up discussing the same things. Epiphany: why not just all get together every so often and discuss these things together? A regular meet-up for unashamed but socially capable geeks.
So, geeky topics and pub banter means that Geek and Banter is the perfect epithet. What’s more the Twitter handle was available and that was as good an affirmation of the excellence of the idea that I needed. Who knows where it’ll go but Geek and Banter is thinking big.
I immediately (well, within two months – I think that’s pretty good!) set to work organising the first Geek and Banter.
Two key features of the evenings that I’ve spent discussing these geeky topics are that they are overflowing with million pound genius ideas and that I can’t remember any of them by the time I’m nursing my befuddled head the next day.
One that I did manage to remember (because I wrote myself a note in my phone) is self-evident in this blog. I remembered to do something about Geek and Banter.
This blog will be a, probably somewhat inaccurate record, of the conversations over the course of the evenings. It will also serve as a central point for coordination and event instructions.
